Controlling Our Impulses

Techniques to slow down mind for mindful response and impulse control. The triad of heart, mind and breath are key to impulse control. Impulse control is primarily about sense control. Five senses(sound, touch, sight, taste and smell and five organs of action - hand, feet, mouth, defecation and procreation. The motor control of them is mind the intellect but (man)heart can bypass it. Vedas characterize the five sense as five runaway horses and intellect the rein. While this is true for person of Sattvic temperament but does not hold for ones with Rajasic(Passion) and Tamsic(sloth) nature. A combination of heartful logical counseling plus a disciplined kriyas help set a new pattern and break the old one. This includes pondering over the why of the whole point of getting more, realizing doing well with what you have will automatically compound rather than losing it all in rush to go big.

So it is overcoming ignorance, attachment and karma weakness with knowledge, will and action.

So sense control has similarity to Yogic techniques involving discipline, intellect and hearts in overcoming the senses.
